Low-level laser therapy has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of post-mastectomy arm Lymphedema and specifically, the Riancorp LTU-904 laser therapy unit is the only laser device cleared by FDA for such treatment. (read more)
The LTU-904 laser therapy unit is placed into direct contact with the skin for short intervals to deliver the laser treatment. Depending on the type and severity of the problem, total treatment time may last from only a few, to perhaps upward of 10 minutes. The laser does not heat the skin tissue and the patient does not feel any warmth or discomfort during treatment. Lasers of this type are considered to be "eye safe" under FDA guidelines. Reduction in swelling and scar tissue build up should be noticeable after six weeks of treatment.
Low level laser therapy is not a cure for Lymphedema and should be combined with regular Lymphedema treatment using traditional compression garments and devices as part of an overall Lymphedema management regimen.
