Components Of Compression Bandaging For Lymphedema

What Are The Components Of Compression Bandaging For Lymphedema

Compression bandaging for lymphedema is a key aspect of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) which is performed as the initial phase of treatment for lymphedema. During lymphedema Complete Decongestive Therapy a multilayer compression bandage is applied after your healthcare provider has performed Manual Lymphatic Drainage to help move built-up lymph fluid out of affected tissues and back into the lymphatic vessels where it can drain.

Multilayer compression bandaging is used to support the area affected by lymphedema and to control the recurrence of swelling (edema) by preventing lymph fluid from returning to the area that was treated by manual lymphatic drainage massage. The multilayer compression bandage system consists of several layers, as follows:

  • The initial layer is a stockinette that is applied directly to the limb or area being treated to provide a protective layer between the skin and the outer layer of short stretch compression bandages.
  • Next comes a padding layer of foam or medical padding that is used to provide cushioning and help ensure consistent pressure and support of the multilayer compression bandage system.
  • The final, outer layer of the multilayer compression bandage are short stretch compression bandages which creates a working pressure layer that helps control swelling, promotes the flow of lymph fluid and maintain limb size.
