The effect that having and treating Lymphedema with compression garments and compression bandages has on the skin can create and lead to an environment that is easily susceptible to open wounds. Once started even the smallest of wounds, if left untreated, can quickly lead to further complications and health issues for those who suffer from Lymphedema.

Skin should be kept moisturized at least once daily using specially formulated moisturizing emollients which will help make the outer layer of skin softer and more pliable. Off the shelf, perfumed or chemically enhanced body lotions and creams should be avoided as they may actually cause skin to dry, rather than moisturizing and healing. Maintaining healthy and well moisturized skin will help keep the skin tissues intact, and prevent a wound susceptible environment. Certain skin care creams and lotions, may also be used to help provide relief to skin sensitivity and pain caused by the compressive effects of the compression bandages and garments being used to treat or manage the Lymphedema.
