Wound Degradation

There are several inflammatory stimulants that can adversely affect proper wound healing:

  • necrosis (the death of most or all cells in tissue)
  • slough (a layer of dead skin)
  • biofilm (a thin, slimy layer of bacteria)
  • other wound debris

Left alone, each of these stimulants can trap a wound within the inflammatory phase of wound healing and therefore, must be addressed through effective wound bed preparation to help progress the wound to the proliferative (growth of tissue cells) phase of wound healing.

Devitalized (necrotic tissue or slough) tissue can also interfere with the accurate assessment of a wound and surrounding skin, or reduce the effectiveness of topical preparations, further complicating effective wound treatment.

Wound Debridement Challenges

Debridement of the wound bed helps expose the true condition of the wound area, allowing for an accurate assessment of the wound, allows topical medications to reach the skin to deliver therapeutic benefits, and in general, enhances overall wound healing.

There are however, several challenges to effective wound debridement:

  • Pain for the patient
  • Trauma to healthy and newly formed tissue
  • Cost and time (the number of required procedures)
  • Training of the healthcare provider

The Debrisoft Solution

Debrisoft products are unique in that they provide safe and highly effective debridement that significantly improves wound bed preparation for acute and chronic wounds.

The National Institute for Health Care Excellence (NICE) has issued guidance which concludes that by using Debrisoft on the appropriate wounds, they would be “fully debrided more quickly, with fewer nurse visits needed, compared with other debridement methods. In addition, Debrisoft is convenient, easy to use, and is well tolerated by patients”. In summary, Debrisoft:

  • Is more effective at debridement than the common practice of using autolytic dressings (dressings which maintain a moist wound bed environment) and irrigating wounds with saline or cleansing with gauze.
  • Provides faster debridement, allowing earlier visibility of the wound bed, thereby improving overall wound management.
  • Results in less frequent and fewer overall care visits (significant cost savings).
  • Reduces the risk of trauma to healthy and newly formed tissue.

Debrisoft pads are ideal for cleansing wound surfaces and removing hyperkeratotic (thickened layer of outer skin) or dry skin, while Debrisoft Lolly can safely reach deep or tunneled areas where alternative debridement methods may not be practical.

The Debrisoft Difference Through Clinical Outcomes

Lohmann and Rauscher has chronicled several clinical outcomes of the use of Debrisoft wound bed preparation and wound debridement products on venous leg ulcers, pressure injuries and mixed leg ulcers:

The Debrisoft wound debridement and wound hygiene pads must be hydrated for use (recommend saline or other wound cleaning products).
