Main Components Of The Lower Leg Compression Bandaging Kit

Each item in the bandaging kit plays an important role in the effective treatment and management of lymphedema and edema:

Tubular Stockinette: The tubular stockinette is the first layer of compression bandaging, and it helps protect the skin from the pressure caused by the foam padding and the short stretch compression bandages.

Foam Padding and Foam Roll: Foam padding plays an important role in a multi-layered compression bandaging system by creating pressure and breaking up concentrations of heavy lymph fluid.

Short Stretch Compression Bandages: Short stretch compression bandages help create the working pressure needed to treat lymphedema and prevent the expansion of swelling or edema. Because these bandages simultaneously provide pressure and expand, they help move lymphatic fluid out of the leg. There are 3 different sizes of short stretch compression bandages included in the kit.

Below are frequently asked questions about our Bandages Plus lymphedema bandaging kits for the lower leg.

  • What Is A Lower Leg Lymphedema Bandaging Kit
  • A lower leg bandaging kit for lymphedema is a pre-assembled set of medical supplies that are used to apply compression to the lower leg. The products in the kit are used in conjunction with each other to provide a multi-layer compression wrap.

  • What Is Included In The Lower Leg Lymphedema Bandaging Kit
  • The lymphedema bandaging kit contains short stretch bandages, foam padding, gauze bandages, a tubular stockinette, and medical tape.

  • How Does Bandaging The Lower Leg Help Treat Lymphedema
  • Lower leg bandaging helps treat many aspects of lymphedema:

    •  - Reduces Swelling: The pressure from the short-stretch bandage helps shift stagnant lymph fluid from the lower leg back toward the trunk of your body.
    •  - Improves Lymph Flow: Graduated compression (tighter near the ankle and looser toward the knee) promotes upward flow of lymphatic fluid through both superficial and deep lymph vessels.
    •  - Softens Fibrotic Tissue: Padding and bandages help break down hard or thickened areas caused by long-term lymphedema swelling.
    •  - Prevents Fluid From Accumulating Again: Consistent compression in the lower leg helps keep fluid from building up again between wrapping sessions.
    •  - Supports Muscle Pump Action: The resistance of the short-stretch bandage helps activates deeper compression when your leg muscles contract, which additionally helps move lymph fluid.
    •  - Protects Skin: The padding and layers of bandaging help prevent skin damage and reduce the risk of infection.

  • What Is The Purpose Of Each Of The Products In The Lower Leg Lymphedema Bandaging Kit
  • Each product in the lymphedema bandaging kit plays a unique role in providing compression on your lower leg. Here are the products (in the order in which they are applied to your lower leg):

    •  - Tubular Stockinette: The tubular stockinette is worn as the first layer to protect the skin and provide a comfortable base for bandaging.
    •  - Foam Roll: Foam is applied over the tubular stockinette to evenly distribute pressure, cushion bony areas, and help soften fibrotic (hardened) tissue.
    •  - Foam Padding: Foam padding enhances contouring, fills in gaps, and helps support even pressure across your lower leg.
    •  - Gauze Bandages: Gauze bandages are often used to secure the foam layers and to secure foam around your toes and foot.
    •  - Short Stretch Bandages: Short stretch bandages provide high working pressure when your muscles are active and low resting pressure when you are at rest. The bandages promote lymph fluid movement, without causing discomfort or restricting your circulation.
    •  - Medical Tape: Tape is used to secure the ends of the bandages and keep layers from unraveling.

  • What Are Lower Leg Lymphedema Bandaging Kits Commonly Used For
  • The bandaging kits for the lower leg are commonly used to treat: lymphedema, edema, post-surgery swelling, and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

  • Do I Need A Prescription To Order A Lower Leg Lymphedema Bandaging Kit
  • You do NOT need a prescription to order a lower leg lymphedema bandaging kit (or any of the other lymphedema products on our website).

  • Can I Apply The Lymphedema Bandages Myself
  • After proper training, some people can apply their own lymphedema bandages. Training helps ensure that you are applying the bandaging correctly (in order to apply safe and effective pressure).

  • How Often Should The Bandages Be Reapplied
  • Lymphedema bandages are typically reapplied daily, but check with your healthcare provider.

  • Are The Bandages And Supplies Reusable
  • The stockinette and foam in the kit are reuseable (for short periods), and the short stretch bandages may be reused if they are clean and in good condition. The tape and gauze are disposable – designed for one-time use.

  • Are The Short Stretch Bandages Washable
  • You can hand-wash the short stretch bandages (in a mild soap or detergent) and air-dry them. Do not machine wash or wring the bandages out, as this can damage the fibers.

  • Are There Different Sizes Of Lower Leg Lymphedema Bandaging Kits
  • The lymphedema bandaging kit for the lower leg is a “one size fits all” kit, which should accommodate most leg sizes. If you have larger or smaller legs, you may need customized bandaging supplies.

  • Can I Purchase Replacement Supplies Separately
  • All of the items in the lower bandaging kits are also sold individually on our website. If you run out of an item, you can purchase it separately.
